When I picked up "You Are Mine" by Vera Turner, I knew I was diving into a dark, twisted world, but I was not fully prepared for the gripping and intense experience that awaited me. This novella, labeled as a pitch-black stalker romance, takes you on a rollercoaster ride through obsession, manipulation, and a disturbing quest for control.

Summary: The story centers around Holly, affectionately yet tauntingly referred to as "my little Onion" by her stalker. In a desperate attempt to escape his clutches, Holly leaves her city apartment for a desolate town, hoping the isolation will offer her some protection. However, her stalker is determined and cunning, viewing Holly's move not as a setback but as a challenge to be overcome. The narrative is driven by his chilling steps to reclaim her: eliminating her boyfriend, punishing her for fleeing, and ultimately planning to keep her forever.

From the very beginning, I was hooked by the chilling premise. The idea that Holly's attempt at freedom would only lead her deeper into the stalker's control was both horrifying and fascinating. The stalker's perspective, presented in an eerily calm and methodical manner, added layers of psychological depth to the story. His obsession with Holly is unsettling, yet Vera Turner’s writing is so compelling that I couldn’t look away.

Review: "You Are Mine" is not for the faint of heart. The story is as dark as it gets, diving into themes of control, obsession, and psychological manipulation. Turner masterfully builds tension, making every step of the stalker's plan feel inevitable yet shocking. The rural setting, where Holly's screams would go unheard, adds to the sense of isolation and helplessness.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the book is the dynamic between Holly and her stalker. Holly is portrayed as resourceful and resilient, yet her strength is continuously tested by the relentless pursuit of her captor. This interplay keeps the reader on edge, rooting for Holly while simultaneously dreading what will come next.

The novella's pacing is brisk, which works well for the intensity of the plot. Each chapter leaves you wanting more, making it difficult to put the book down. Despite its dark themes, the story does promise a happily ever after (HEA), which provides a sliver of hope amidst the darkness. However, it's important to heed the trigger warnings, as the book delves into disturbing and potentially distressing territory.

Conclusion: Reading "You Are Mine" by Vera Turner was a harrowing yet enthralling experience. It's a novella that pulls no punches, immersing the reader in a world where freedom is fickle, and control is the ultimate goal. If you’re a fan of dark romance and psychological thrillers, this book will undoubtedly captivate you. Just be prepared for a story that challenges your comfort zone and lingers in your mind long after you’ve turned the last page.

But beyond the chess matches, "Check & Mate" is ultimately a story about resilience and redemption. Mallory's journey to reclaim her love for the game and find happiness despite her past struggles is both inspiring and heartwarming.

Overall, "Check & Mate" is a captivating read that will appeal to fans of YA romance and stories about overcoming adversity. With its witty dialogue, endearing characters, and swoon-worthy romance, it's a book that left me eagerly anticipating Ali Hazelwood's next book, "Not in Love" which comes out June 11.

"Stealing the Bogeyman's Bride" by Georgie Monroe is a captivating dive into a fantastical world filled with fae and forbidden love.

The story follows Auralia, who finds herself entangled in a web of passion and duty. Despite the outward animosity between her and Donovan, their hidden feelings for each other burn bright.

Trapped in a bond with a fae she despises, Auralia faces a heartbreaking choice when her estranged husband demands her return. As she prepares to leave her dream life behind, Donovan refuses to let her go without a fight.

Monroe's storytelling is both dark and spicy, delivering a tale that's sure to keep readers hooked. With its intriguing twists and turns, the dynamic between Auralia and Donovan adds depth to the narrative.

"Stealing the Bogeyman's Bride" is a delightful addition to the Faetales series, offering a tantalizing blend of romance and fantasy. With its themes of unrequited love and rivals-to-lovers, it's a must-read for anyone enchanted by the world of fae folklore.

Despite these drawbacks, "The House of Starlight & Shadow" still offered an entertaining read filled with adventure and suspense. While it may not have been perfect, it held enough intrigue to keep me turning pages, eager to uncover the secrets hidden within its pages.

"Reading 'The Cruel Dark' by Bea Northwick was like stepping into a time machine, whisking me away to the enigmatic world of Millicent Foxboro in the year 1928. Millicent's haunting past and uncertain future immediately drew me in, setting the stage for a mesmerizing tale of secrets and shadows.

Millicent, haunted not by ghosts but by the anguish of her own history, seizes an opportunity for stability when she lands an assistantship to the reclusive Professor Callum Hughes. Little did she know, the once-magnificent estate of Willowfield, with its crumbling beginning and bitter memories, would become her new reality.

As Millicent delved deeper into the mysteries surrounding Professor Hughes and his world of flowers and folklore, I found myself captivated by the palpable tension between them. The professor's grim demeanor and hungry eyes ignited dormant passions within Millicent, while the secrets lurking within Willowfield threatened to unravel her own.

Bea Northwick's evocative prose transported me to a bygone era, where romance, mystery, and intrigue intertwine amidst the fading grandeur of a once-glorious estate. With each twist and turn, 'The Cruel Dark' kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly unraveling the threads of its spellbinding narrative.

This book not only captured my imagination but also left me yearning for more. I eagerly await the next installment in Millicent's journey, eager to uncover the secrets that lie hidden in the shadows of Willowfield."

Left behind to shoulder the responsibility of raising her half-sister Teagan, Jess sacrificed her aspirations to shield Teagan from the anguish of abandonment. Now on the verge of adulthood, Teagan embarks on a quest fueled by a newfound lead suggesting their mother may still be reachable. With unwavering determination, Teagan enlists the help of unlikely allies: Salem Durant, a captivating true-crime podcaster, and her astute assistant Adam.

When Teagan decides to go on a journey by herself, Jess finds herself obligated to join in hopes of protecting Teagan from harsh truths. As they pursue a trail of compelling clues, the journey to locate their mother becomes an odyssey of self-discovery, where the search for one lost soul may ultimately lead to the illumination of their own identity.

On a personal and emotional level, I see the longing for the loss and the grief of a missing parent portrayed very well. The nonending ifs and questions about why her mother left then the feeling of betrayal and resentment are so valid. Jess left her feelings aside, focusing only on raising Teagan well and not missing her mother.

We can see the evolution of relationships between the sisters, the dynamic between Adam and Jess, and the personal growth of all the characters.

We have a Dual POV, alternating between Jess and Adam, with a writing style that is clear and concise. Despite the presence of descriptive elements for both characters and the story, they serve a vital purpose, enriching and enhancing the overall narrative.

I found this read immensely enjoyable, feeling that the book was expertly crafted, evoking a range of emotions throughout.

I highly recommend this book!

I was torn between 3.5 and 5 stars, but ultimately, I think a solid 4-star rating is the best fit.
